Chad H. and his family came to Sixteen Penny Construction with a first floor that no longer worked for how they actually lived. The kitchen felt closed off, the laundry room was purely functional and nothing more, and a half bath and the surrounding living spaces, foyers, and stairways needed refreshing to match. It wasn’t one project so much as several connected ones — the kind of scope that tests whether a builder can keep a family’s daily life livable while the work happens around them.
What They Wanted
A kitchen that opened up rather than closed off the first floor. A laundry room that did more than just hold a washer and dryer. And a half bath, living room, foyer, and staircases that felt cohesive with the rest of the renovation — not patched in separately later. Underneath all of it was something less tangible but just as important: a family who wanted to actually enjoy working with the people building their home, not just tolerate the process to get to the finished result.
What We Did
The scope covered a full kitchen remodel, a redesigned laundry room, a half bath, and a refresh of the living room, foyers, and stairways connecting them — effectively the whole first floor working together as one project rather than a series of disconnected rooms. The timing added real difficulty: this project moved through the Covid era, with all the supply chain unpredictability and rising material costs that came with it during that stretch.
Wes Piatt and project manager Chris B. led the project, and staying adaptive became one of the defining parts of the job — Chad’s family made a number of change requests along the way, and accommodating those without losing momentum or blowing the budget took real communication, not just scheduling.
What Made the Difference
By Chad’s own account, the relationship with the team was one of the primary reasons they chose Sixteen Penny in the first place — and it held up throughout the project, not just during the sales conversation. Strong communication and genuine adaptiveness to the family’s requests stood out. And when parts of the project didn’t go exactly as planned, which happens on any real renovation, the team stood behind the work and made it right rather than treating it as the homeowner’s problem to absorb.
In Chad’s Words
“Sixteen Penny came strongly recommended, and they did not disappoint!! 16P completed a first-floor remodel for our family (new kitchen, laundry room and half bath; refreshed living room, foyers, and stair cases). Despite many hurdles during the Covid era (e.g., rising prices, product availability), we had a great experience with Wes P (owner) and Chris B. (project manager). Relationships were one of the primary reason we chose 16P and that proved to be an important factor throughout our project. Here are some other things we liked about 16P: strong communication, adaptive to our needs and requests (e.g., many change requests), and provided a great final product! But one of the most important aspects we appreciated was 16P standing behind the quality of their work. There were instances when parts of the project didn’t go as planned, but they stood by our side and made it right. I strongly recommend giving Sixteen Penny a chance on your project!”
